HUGO'S NORWEGIAN IN THREE MONTHS
Oeivind Bloom. Hunter Publishing Inc., Edison NJ 08818
ISBN 1-55650-175-7, Book and 4 Cassettes ($49.95)
Available from Heritage Books and Travel Books.

This is a thin book packed full of well-presented lessons aimed
at beginning students. The method of instruction is unabashedly
grammar-translation oriented, with each of the 12 lessons
beginning with clear English explanations and Norwegian examples
of grammatical topics, such as chapter 1 "Articles and nouns,
Plural of nouns, subject pronouns, 'å være' (to be) and 'å ha
(to have). The chapters conclude with the section called
"Vocabulary, Exercises & Conversation." Exercises, the
traditional "give the plural of the following words" have the
answers provided in the back of the book. Many exercises ask the
student to translate contrived English sentences (e.g., Please
shut the window.) with Norwegian equivalents given at the end of
the book (Vær så snill og lukk vinduet.). The conversations are
dialogs, presented in Norwegian, with English following on the
next page ("Good Morning! What a nice surprise! I am curious to
hear about your journey with the Coastal Express!" The book
begins with the obligatory description of the language situation
in Norway, with an explanation of the language used in the book
(moderate bokmål). The introductory pronunciation section covers
how to use the book's pronunciation guide (imitated pronunciation),
short and long vowels, consonants, and dipthongs. A succinct page
describes "Stress, rhythm and tone." This book can be used by
motivated students or students who have access to more
conversational approaches to language learning. The grammar and
translation aspects may be too old-fashioned for the tastes of
many students, but it is often appropriate to have a way to check
yourself on how well you can know the grammatical forms.

NORSK, NORDMENN OG NORGE.
Kathleen Stokker og Odd Haddal. The University of Wisconsin Press,
114 N. Murray St., Madison WI 53715 ISBN 0-299-08690-9.
Textbook ($24.95), Workbook (14.95), Tapes ($100).
Available from Heritage Books and Travel Books. Tapes available
from the University of Wisconsin Press.

This book, workbook, and tape set cover one year of beginning
Norwegian at a college level. It is aimed at an American audience,
and is usable for self-study as well as in a classroom setting.
The 28 chapters in the text contain dialogs, grammatical
explanations, reading passages, and exercises (mostly fill in the
blanks and answer questions). The cassette tapes present many of
the dialogs and reading passages, pronunciation, and oral response
exercises. The workbook gives further exercises, grammatical
summaries by topic, and a key to what is heard on the cassettes.
A lengthy grammar review is included as an appendix to the main
text, as is a Norwegian glossary to all words and expressions
used in the book.

TEACH YOURSELF NORWEGIAN
Alf Sommerfelt and Invald Marm. Teach Yourself Books.
ISBN: 0-8442-3814-7; Book ($15.95), No tapes.
Available from Heritage Books and Travel Books

This venerable source for self-study holds its own against other
more modern books. It bases the lessons on grammar, with chapters named,
for example "Chapter XV. Pronouns and Pronomial Adjectives." Little
attention is paid to the more creative, proficiency
orientation. But, the book serves well to develop a strong sense
for how Norwegian works, and it doubles as a reference grammar,
so the learner can look things up fairly easily. Where else could
you find information on the future perfect tense? Exercises are chiefly
translation (both directions e.g., Which of the boys is cleverest?" or "En
ung dame spurte: Hva heter det fjellet der?").
The answers are provided in the back of the book, along with a
list of irregular verbs and two glossaries. I have known several students
who, without the help of a live teacher, managed to
learn to SPEAK Norwegian solely with this book. That impressed me!
